Learning Center
Learn for school. Learn for life.
In cooperation with the organization Bakusasa Development Centre (Bakusasa) Go Ahead! is working in the Jozini region (in KwaZuLuNatal, South Africa) to give children and young people who have lost their parents or one of their parents due to the consequences of HIV/AIDS a better perspective. The doors of the Learning Center (LC) are open to up to 40 children and young people every month after school. They receive a warm meal, homework supervision, psychological support and find a place where they can simply be children without worries. In addition, Bakusasa staff work closely with the local community and offer homework assistance at home, hold workshops on health, hygiene and education issues and work hard to strengthen their community.
The Learning Center was founded in 2009 and was supervised until 2016 by our then partner organization Heartbeat, which established the proven Heartbeat model: children and young people are left in their familiar surroundings whenever possible and are supported locally. Not only the adolescents benefit from this successful model, but also the community members who act as caregivers. With the desire to hand over the LC to a local organization, Bakusasa was founded with LC staff. The staff is directly reporting to members of the local council, the school director and other important people in the community.
